So, Yo Want To Be A Vegan?

Almost everyone I meet asks me, “how did you become a Vegan and why?” It didn’t happen over night in fact it took approximately nine years. The first two were spent cutting out every kind of meat except chicken and fish. Five more years were devoted to practicing vegetarianism. And now just over two and a half, Vegan. I capitalize Vegan because I have the utmost respect for the “movement”.

Years ago I hired a guy to teach my son piano and he was the first Vegan I had ever met. His name was Todd and he was from California. (go figure!) I was intrigued, but not ready to make any major changes in diet or anything else for that matter. But, the subject came up from time to time. Really, I didn’t think about it much until I went vegetarian and as the years past and read more and more books on the subject I became very attracted to the whole movement.

One of the first books that started me down the Vegan path was an Al Franken book, “Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them”. He tore into the Texas pig farmers and how they are polluting the ground water and the Gulf of Mexico. It was horrible to read about and I quit pig then and there.
No sweat!

Then I started getting more and more interested in the vegetarian world and along came Elijah, the second Vegan I had met. He is a proponent of Dr. Joel Fuhrman and his book, “Eat to Live”. After that, “Skinny Bitch”, by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, “Food Matters, A Guide to Conscious Eating” and I was hooked. I wanted more than anything to get meat and meat by-products out of my life. I won’t go into all the details as too why, surmise it to say, “There are more reasons not to eat it than there are to eat it”. And that is simply what I tell most people.

The thing is that I educated myself and followed my natural instinct to their logical end, I am healthier on every level, every aspect imaginable. It is like telling a smoker or a drinker how much happier they could be with out the poisons in their body and brain, but never quite being able to find the right words. Words that convey the passion I now feel.

And honestly, you can’t really be a very good Yogi while you are supporting the meat industry.  One aspect of life all Yogis practice sooner or later if they stay on the path, is active harmlessness and the mass murdering (or killing) of large numbers of living creatures is not harmless. It is estimated that each Vegan saves the lives of approximately 90 animals each year. I am working on 270 just being Vegan for three years. I am pretty proud of that.

Recently I visited the East Coast and was with my Uncle Jack. He said he wasn’t surprised that I am a Vegan because once as a little girl I got mad at him for pheasant hunting. I told him it was “wrong to kill Gods creatures”. So, I guess I’ve been a Vegan in the making for a very long time!
